Does sitting in office from 9 to 7 makes your routine monotonous and boring? Are you worried about the sudden weight gain and want to stay away from extra calories at work? Well, many offices around the globe have introduced the concept of standing desks, where the employees can stand more and sit less. But does this remedy literally helps in cutting down calories and can this help you lose weight?
Recently, a study has been conducted on 1100 people to measure the difference between calories burned while sitting versus standing. The results showed that standing burned an extra 0.15 calories per minute, compared with sitting. The results revealed that men burned an extra 0.2 calories per minute while standing. While women burned an extra 0.1 calories per minute while standing. This difference is because men typically have more muscle mass than women.
The findings further show that a person whose weight is approximately 65 kilograms might burn an extra 54 calories per day if he/she substitutes sitting with standing. Although, this amount of calories will not be very significant for people who want to lose weight, but it could surely prevent weight gain.
According to researchers, Standing is “better than sitting, but you need more activity” for weight loss. Also, it has been found that sitting too long for longer duration is directly linked with an increased risk of a number of conditions, including breast and colon cancer, diabetes, and heart disease, as well as an increased risk of early death.
By simply substituting sitting with standing can lead to some reductions in fat and blood-sugar levels. A study conducted on about 830 patients showed that those people who stood more at work showed a slightly greater reduction in blood glucose levels and body fat levels. But this will not be sufficient if one wishes to lose weight.
According to experts, at least 60-120 minutes of walking, cycling, swimming or any other activity is necessary every day to lose weight.
