Chocolate, the very word makes the mouth water and for many, it uplifts the mood instantly. Be it is someone’s birthday, any festival, some special event or making your girlfriend happy, chocolate fits into all kinds of occasions. It is one thing that is loved both by children and adults. Well, chocolate lovers here is the good news for you: Chocolate also comes with its own heath benefits.

According to the scientific studies, chocolate helps in reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Also, as per the new research from Denmark chocolate helps in the prevention of the development of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). Atrial fibrillation can lead to blood clots, stroke, and even heart failure. Scientists discovered an interesting fact during the research: people who consumed chocolate at least once or more frequently in a month had rates of atrial fibrillation -10 to 20%- lower than those who consumed chocolate less than once a month.

Elizabeth Mostofsky, the author of the study and a researcher at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston found through the research that the strongest effect of consuming chocolate was seen in women and men who ate 1 ounce of chocolate, two to six times per week.

The study also read that around 2.7 to 6.1 million Americans are suffering from atrial fibrillation and he is trying to find the effective ways to prevent it.

The research was conducted on 55,000 adults (men and women) between ages 50 to 64 in Denmark. All these people were participants in an ongoing study called the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health Study.

Chocolate consumption in moderation

During the research, it was found that more than 3,300 adults were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter ( the condition in which the heart beats faster than normal) over 13.5 years, on average.

When researchers were contemplating other factors such as alcohol intake, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol level which could have been the reason for people developing arterial fibrillation, the study revealed a connection between people with a moderate consumption of chocolate and a lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation. The study didn’t prove that chocolate prevents atrial fibrillation but the researchers said that it is maybe because of the flavonoids in chocolate that may play a role in preventing atrial fibrillation.

Flavonoids have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that may prevent atrial fibrillation, the researcher said. He also shared that people must go for chocolates with a high cocoa content as it has more health benefits.
